Alaska king salmon are the largest salmonids in the world. They are also known as chinook salmon. Our Average Chinook is around 30lbs and many 40-50 lb Alaska King salmon are taken each summer fishing. Alaskan King Salmon are distinguished by the black irregular spotting on the back and dorsal fins, Chinook salmon also have a black mouth. Wild Alaska King Salmon are the largest of the five Alaska Salmon species. Easy to prepare, Wild King Salmon are in a class all of their own. King salmon spend from 2-5 years in the ocean so their size in a run varies considerably. Kenai king salmon are typically in the 50 lb range. Guided Alaska fishing vacationers will often only spend a few hours before they hook their king salmon and land one. In the saltwater of the Kenai, most fishing for king salmon is done by trolling cut herring or herring attractors. On the Kenai River and the Kasilof River guided anglers in drift and power boats have good success by back trolling a Jet-planer with Kwikfish, Flatfish, Magnum Wiggle Worts, Tadpollys, Spin-n-Glos, and salmon egg clusters.

Just a note to bank fisherman, no matter what Kenai water you are fishing, be prepared to run and fight when you hook that king salmon. The largest sport-caught chinook salmon was a 97-pound fish taken in the Kenai River in 1986. The Nushagak river gets the largest run of King Salmon of all the rivers in Alaska with an annual run of 100-140 thousand King salmon starting June 15th through July 15th. It\'s common for our fisherman to hook 15-30 king salmon a day and land 10-15 kings a day.

The Male King Salmon are more aggressive to a fly and more deeply colored than the females, they are distinguished by their \"ridgeback\" condition and by their hooked nose or upper jaw. King Salmon are perhaps the most sought after fish in the country.
